Surprise guest for Finley kids

By Keira Doyle

Young footy enthusiasts in Finley were given quite the surprise last week when homegrown AFL star Tom Hawkins stopped by for a visit.

The footballer happened to be stopping through town on business and, according to Finley Football Club president Matt Clarke, he always takes advantage of the opportunity to have a kick with the next generation.

“Tom was passing through and, as usual, he had a kick around with the kids.

“It’s not something he has to do; he says he enjoys it, and it makes the kids so happy.

“It’s great to see a professional athlete taking time out of his busy schedule to give back to the community and inspire the next generation of footballers.”

Around 15 to 20 aspiring footballers went to the Finley Football Club oval for the session.

The kids were thrilled to have the chance to play with

a professional footballer and learn from him.

“The kids loved it. It’s nice to see the smile on their faces, especially when they

are all lining up for Tom’s autograph.

“It’s a memory they will cherish for a long time,” Clarke said.
